![]() The new mount means new lenses, which are often slow to roll out over time, and the lenses most often sought after for underwater use are usually not at the top of the manufacturers to-do list. Similar to other new releases, the new RF lens system from Canon will have limited native use for underwater photographers. What we haven't seen is the plan for rolling out future lenses in the new RF mount. Already we see a wider variety in lenses from Canon's new mount than Nikon's, covering the common focal lengths for topside and including a fast prime and a macro lens. With the release Canon has rolled out four new lenses, which include a RF 28-70mm F/2L USM, RF 50mm F/1.2L USM, RF24-105mm F/4L IS USM & RF 35mm F/1.8 Macro IS STM. This new mount is paired with a trio of adapters that will provide complete compatibility with all Canon EF, EF-S, TS-E & MP-E lenses. Like the new Nikon Z mount, this will enable Canon to create new, faster lenses, and also new lenses comparable to current EF lenses but in a smaller overall size, better suited for the smaller mirrorless cameras. The RF mount, features the same wide 54mm diameter as the classic EF mount, but a shorter flange distance, which will result in less need to bend light through the lens. Looking to the future, Canon has released a new mount alongside their new full frame mirrorless camera. This system, which includes a new camera, new lens mount and new lenses will be available starting in October. Hot on the heels of the recent Nikon Z announcement, Canon has unveiled their first full frame mirrorless, the Canon EOS R. However, that shouldn't be your only criteria to purchase a camera so make sure you wait for the reviews before taking the plunge.Canon Announces New EOS R Full Frame Mirrorless and New RF Lens Mount Priced at $1299 for the body and $2399 with the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM, the EOS RP is one of the most affordable ways to get into the full frame. Both have a crop in 4K but the EOS R does 720p at 120fps, which the EOS RP can't. More importantly, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF still works in 4K mode on the EOS R but doesn't on the EOS RP. The EOS R also supports higher bit rates, 10-bit color and C-Log, which the EOS RP doesn't. The EOS R can do 4K video at up to 30fps while the EOS RP can only do it up to 24fps. The sensor is obviously different, with the more expensive EOS R having a higher resolution 30.3 megapixel sensor. EOS RP does not have the touchpad or the top LCD of the EOS R The EOS RP does not have the LCD on the top and also loses the touchpad on the back. While the EOS RP is smaller, it also lacks the weather sealing of the EOS R and also has a smaller battery. You could also get one of the three adapters made by Canon, the standard Mount Adapter, which is included with the camera in some markets, the Control Ring Mount Adapter that lets you use the Control Ring feature found on RF lenses with any other lens, and the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter, which lets you add filters.ĭifferences between the EOS R and EOS RP are several and some rather serious. The EOS RP has the same RF mount as the EOS R, so all the EOS R lenses are natively supported. The EOS RP supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Canon will optionally sell you a camera grip that attaches to the bottom and extends the height of the camera for a more comfortable grip. The camera uses the LP-E17 batteries and supports USB charging. EOS RP comes with an optional grip extender that attaches to the bottom The EOS RP has a 0.39-type OLED EVF with 2.36M dots and 100% coverage along with a fully articulating 3.0-inch 1.04M dots LCD touchscreen. It has 88% coverage and can focus down to EV -5. The camera has Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with a staggering 4779 manually selectable AF points and a focusing time of approximately 0.05 seconds with native lenses. It has an sensitivity of up to 40000 ISO for stills and 25600 for video. The EOS RP has a 26.2 megapixel full frame sensor, that is likely the same one used on the EOS 6D Mark II. ![]() Canon is pitching this as the full frame camera for the masses. The EOS RP is a cheaper model and also happens to be the smallest full frame camera in Canon's history. EOS RP has the same RF mount as the EOS R Canon has announced the EOS RP, the second camera in the company's line of full frame mirrorless camera after the original EOS R launched last year.
